For those wishing to push themselves a little bit further, we have a pair of 25km Challenge Walks, both starting from Clogheen, the home of Siul Eile.
Part 2 of the Siul Eile Challenge Walk is another 25km loop starting in Clogheen giving mesmerising views of the Galty Vee Valley. The trail starts off from the village picking up the Blackwater Way National Waymarked Trail (168km trail from Clogheen to Shrone, Co. Kerry) for a daliance with Bay Lough’s resident witch Petticoat Loose. Leaving Petticoat behind the Blackwater Way trail briefly joins up with the Tipperary Heritage Way National Waymarked Trail (56km trail from The Vee to the Rock of Cashel) to the carpark leading down to the corrie lake. Get a glimpse of the valley below as we leave the hordes heading for the lake, instead heading for the quieter environs of the remote parts of the Knockmealdowns by following the Blackwater Way before detouring to take in the Knockalougha peak and then onto the Knochshanahullion peak with its large Bronze Age cairn giving stunning views of the Galty Vee Valley and looking down into Clogheen. The trail then rejoins the Blackwater Way for a few kms before picking up a fabulous ridge trail showing off the Galty Vee Valley in all its glory with its patchwork of fields in the valley surrounded by the Galtees to the north, bookended by the Ballyhouras to the west and Slievenamon and the Comeraghs to the east. Ballyporeen, the ancestral home of Ronald Reagan comes into clear view before the trail then descends into the woods and winds its way back to Clogheen.
The day will be complete with a homecooked dinner and desert for all participants to replenish the lost energy and reflect on a memorable day/weekend of walking!!
