For those wishing to push themselves a little bit further, we have a pair of 25km Challenge Walks, both starting from Clogheen, the home of Siul Eile.
Total Distance: 50 km | Total Ascent: 2000 metres
Firstly is the Knockmealdown Loop, starting in the village picking up the Blackwater National Waymarked Trail (168km trail from Clogheen to Shrone, Co. Kerry), after 2km the trail then veers left to first pick up the East Munster National Waymarked Trail (75km trail from Clogheen to Carrick-on-Suir) and then combining with yet another National Waymarked Trail starting in this area the Tipperary Heritage Way (56km trail from The Vee to the Rock of Cashel) to bring us under the renowned beauty spot The Vee, from here we leave the National Waymarked Trails and start to make our ascent, giving stunning views of the Galty Vee Valley. We will gradually make our way to the top of the Sugarloaf peak to give fabulous views of Tipperary, gaze across to the Galtees, then to Keeper Hill jutting up behind them, Devil’s Bit is also easily picked out as are Slievenamon and the Comeraghs to the east. The trail will then follow along the county boundary wall separating Tipperary and Waterford, first we head for Knockmoylan peak to admire the fantastic scenery of the Nire Valley from a high, then onto Knockmealdown, the highest peak in County Waterford with great views of the Blackwater Valley, the Celtic Sea and all the other peaks of the Knockmealdowns. We then begin our descent towards the Charles Bianconi stagecoach hut, passing the cross in memory of the 1987 aircrash victims on the way. We then head to the corrie lake Bay Lough via the Blackwater Way and if we escape the clutches of the witch Petticoat Loose who resides in the lake we will follow the trail back to Clogheen. To finish the day a homecooked dinner and desert will be provided to all participants to replenish the lost energy!!
Distance: 25 km | Ascent: 991 metres | Duration: 6-7 hours
Walk Start Time: 10am
Part 2 of the Siul Eile Challenge Walk is another 25km loop starting in Clogheen giving mesmerising views of the Galty Vee Valley. The trail starts off from the village picking up the Blackwater Way National Waymarked Trail (168km trail from Clogheen to Shrone, Co. Kerry) for a daliance with Bay Lough’s resident witch Petticoat Loose. Leaving Petticoat behind the Blackwater Way trail briefly joins up with the Tipperary Heritage Way National Waymarked Trail (56km trail from The Vee to the Rock of Cashel) to the carpark leading down to the corrie lake. Get a glimpse of the valley below as we leave the hordes heading for the lake, instead heading for the quieter environs of the remote parts of the Knockmealdowns by following the Blackwater Way before detouring to take in the Knockalougha peak and then onto the Knochshanahullion peak with its large Bronze Age cairn giving stunning views of the Galty Vee Valley and looking down into Clogheen. The trail then rejoins the Blackwater Way for a few kms before picking up a fabulous ridge trail showing off the Galty Vee Valley in all its glory with its patchwork of fields in the valley surrounded by the Galtees to the north, bookended by the Ballyhouras to the west and Slievenamon and the Comeraghs to the east. Ballyporeen, the ancestral home of Ronald Reagan comes into clear view before the trail then descends into the woods and winds its way back to Clogheen.
The day will be complete with a homecooked dinner and desert for all participants to replenish the lost energy and reflect on a memorable day/weekend of walking!!
